Chapter 7 -- In Search of a Book Seller

Post by jcftao »

Upon returning to Wickersham, the group meets with Farlo, Captain of the Guard. Walking beside him is a tall man in chain mail. He strides with the purposeful grace of a panther. His armor is unadorned, yet well cared for.

"This is Balthar. He's looking for work. Lord Miles requests that you appraise his skills on your next foray into the wild." With that, Farlo turns and walks off, leaving the soldier standing alone in front of you.

Here's a recap for you...
You have returned to Wickersham to make preparations for a journey northward.

"There's a old pile of ruins north of Wickersham along the overland road that leads to Iron Mountain. It's about twelve mile or so. Last time them boys were here, they broke the symbol of Adalbern. Me missus done patched it up, but I don't know if there's enough paste to patch them boys up. Maybe you can do something to get rid of that priest?"

So, if you choose to do so, your mission is to find and investigate the ruins to the north and see what may have happened to Farmer Skinner's wayward sons.

Tarmo inspects the coin purse and finds 40 pieces of silver (this is a goodly sum...remember we are on the silver standard)

Declare what provisions you may need and any other items or persons of interest you need to speak to, for we journey to the north in the morning.

The Rana gets a few days provisions and makes sure he has the necessary gear for the trip. He also makes sure he has a full load out of weapons in case of a showdown.

"Welcome, Balthar. We could use a man like yourself on this journey," Tarmo says. "Until the morning, gents." He buys a few days provisions, in case there is no time to hunt or forage, and readies his gear while availing himself of a spot in the common area of the Inn.

Tarmo hasn't seen an inn since before the day that fire rained downed upon the land...for now he makes avail of a pallet on the floor of the meeting room. The fire is warm and Erlene's cooking will suffice for the moment.

Balthar says,"Greetings. Thank you for allowing me to join your exploits. Captain Farlo speaks well of all. My sword and loyalty are yours. Until the morning, then."

Balthar goes into the Inn to inquire about lodging and a meal for the evening and 2 days additional dry rations.

Balthar looks around the crumbling ruins of the town of Wickersham and finds no inn. Instead, he is welcomed by Erlene, cook at the meeting house. She has a spare pallet and a warm place by the fire and some warm porridge in the morning if lucky.

Tarmo the woodsman, Milton the Rana (a frog-kin) and Thorhall, the large northman are all share the meeting room floor with Balthar.

The morning comes early...it is a crisp and clear day, brisk but the sun is shining.

You all eat a filling meal of porridge and Erlene has baked some fresh rolls and gives you a small pot of honey.

The day is calling...adventure awaits someplace to the north.

What are your actions?

Balthar gratefully compensates Erlene and readily awaits the party to gather for the journey.

Tarmo thanks Erlene for the generous lot of food. He packs up his gear and tends to his horse (he'll set aside a few silver to have him stabled or cared for in town by one of his contacts). During the trip north on the overland road he'll scout ahead of the party a hundred yards or so.

The honey and rolls are most appreciated, agrees Milton. Let's roll.

The weather is pleasant, the brisk morning air soon warms as the sun's rays warm the travelers. The road is little more than an overgrown cart path. Tarmo remembers when the road was well marked and used by many travelling merchants and pilgrims. But now, travelers risk much to move along the roads.

About four hours of marching and the group sees an overgrown pile of broken building nestle in a vine choked hill.

You startle a covey of quail as you near the ruins.
