Aldarren leads you quickly and safely westward, several miles to rejoin the Cormandy Road.

Milton, your head feels a bit better, not having someone's boot kicking on it at the moment. Current HP is 3/5

The night is damp and cold. The road is dark. What do you do now?

Do we get any notion of what's going on in Harkbone right now? Any sights or sounds? Is there any sign of being followed?

The last sights and sounds are of torches in the village, the sounds of the guards searching huts, and the cry of villagers getting knocked about.

There are no signs that you have been followed yet.

"I'm affraid the three of us can't fight Lord Dunley's forces on our own, not even with Theos on our side..." Alexander says, shaking his head. "What do you say we return to New Wickersham and inform Sir Wickersham on what we found out? Maybe we can mobilize a small army and set things right in Harkbone."

Milton nods his aching head. Good plan.

The road west toward New Wickersham quite in the stillness of the night.

You continue onward, each of you deep in thoughts about the day's events.

Aldarren stops abruptly and holds his hand in the air. He has sensed something in the road just ahead.

As you peer into the dimness of the early dawn, you can just make out a figure. Had it not been directly in the road,
it would have easily been mistaken for a tree. But you can barely make out a slight swaying and hear a low rumble,
as if a dog were growling.

Then the creature lurches at you! Arms outstretched, it lumbers forward. You can see it better, but hope you
don't get a good look at the creature.

Smoke seems to rise off of its dead body...

Alexander unsheethes his sword and takes a swing at the creature!

As Alexander moves towards the creature, he can see the blackened arms and charred face. Through black and dark red flesh, cracks glow with a unholy red fire. The brave knight can feel the heat of the creature as he moves to engage.

His sword slips in his hand as he swings. Barely catching his balance, the knight stumbles and his bastard sword flies into the air about 10' to the left of the creature.

The horror moves inward, stooping downward with unclean hands to rend flesh from bone...but alas, it's grip slides off the knight's armor.

[Alexander has initiative, rolled a 1 for attack! Sword slips but he makes a dex save to keep from falling, monster rolls a 4, miss!]

Other PCs still may act this round.

Milton pulls and fires arrows at the creature. Watch out, it might explode when it dies!

Can Alexander make a dive for his sword without putting himself in immediate danger? If so, he will do so, if not:
Alexander quickly pulls his dagger from his belt and tries to stab the creature in the throat.
