Character Creation

Post by merias »

Use this thread for in-progress PCs, or for any questions about character creation. Once done, they will go into the 'Finished Characters' thread.

I'll provide you with six stats and starting gold, you can arrange the stats as you wish and buy whatever equipment you like with the gold you have. Here are the guidelines:

Use the latest White Box rules (PDF link)

By-the-book, with these changes:

- Max hit points at first level

- Fighters get a +1 BHB at first level

- Keep encumbrance simple, as per the rules, assume your 'standard' equipment weighs 10 lbs., to this add any armor and weapon weight and any coins at 10 per pound

- Fighters only get +1 to-hit and damage (melee or hand-hurled weapons) for a STR of 15+, all classes get -1 to-hit/dmg for STR of 6-, and +/- 20lbs carry capacity for the same values.

- A DEX of 13 or higher gives anyone +1 to-hit with missile weapons, 8 or less is -1 to-hit.

- Spell-casters get an adjustment of +/- 1 to the target's saving throw vs. spells, when it applies, for INT (magic-users) or WIS (clerics) of 15+ or 6-

- Holmes scroll rules - M-Us and Clerics can create scrolls of spells they know for 100gp per spell level and 1 week's labor

- M-Us begin play with a spell book containing all 1st level spells. Anything else must be found or bought. Clerics do not have spellbooks, they just pray for spells each day.

- Dwarves can see in the dark up to 60 feet, assuming no other light source brighter than moonlight is nearby.

- All players speak common. Clerics also speak their alignment language (law or chaos), which is more of a limited language used for religious ceremony. Other languages as per the rules, including the additional language for every point of INT above 10. I'll get a list you can choose from if needed.

- Halflings of average or higher intelligence (9+) can speak Gnome and Elvish.

Here is some bbcode you can use for your PCs, you can 'select all', then copy & paste into your post. Feel free to remove what does not apply, or add anything I've forgotten.

Here are your starting stats, remember you can arrange them to suit. Cost of any equipment is as per the rules, assume all items are available, but if you want something not on the list, let me know.

Story
Penwick loves magic, ever since that wizard came to his small town. He hid in the wizard's cart and rode all the way to the mage's tower, convincing the strange man once they'd gotten there, to take him in as an assistant. He learned under the old mage until he was ready for the world. He's squirrly and often doesn't think ahead before acting, but he's a quick study of books and languages and can settle down if he find the topic of interest.

Does my mu get a spell book or will he need to spend his 100p on it?

Yes, thanks for asking as I forgot to clarify that. He gets a spellbook with all first level spells. Anything beyond that must be found or bought.

The 100gp thing is just for scroll creation. So you could create a sleep scroll for 100gp and 1 week's effort.

Here is a sampling:

Orc, goblin, kobold, bugbear, ogre, giant, gnome, dwarf, elf, lizard man, dragon, pixie, treant, druid, lizard man, pegasus, thief's cant (used by brigands, etc), law, chaos

Law/Chaos note - Non-clerics can use up a language slot and learn alignment languages if they wish, but only clerics know them as a class skill

Here's my Dwarf-in-progess. More to come after my lunch break!

.~-= Dolgrim Gardan =-~.

Class & Levels : Fighting Man 1
Race : Dwarf
Alignment : Lawful
Experience Points : 0
XP Bonus : +5%
Hit Dice : 1
Hit Points : 7/7
Armour Class : 5 [14]/5 [14]
Base Hit Bonus : +1

Saving Throw : 14, +4 vs magic, +2 bonus on saving throws vs. death and poison

Abilities
STR : 16 (+1 hit melee, +1 damage melee)
INT : 5
WIS : 6
DEX : 12
CON : 9
CHA : 14 (5 hirelings, +1 loyalty)

Languages: Common, Dwarf?

Appearance
With brown hair, brown eyes and tanned skin, Dolgrim's a pretty stereotypical looking dwarf. He dresses simply, always wearing his chain armor, and carries a hand axe strapped to his hip. What sets him apart is his short, unkempt beard and his nearly ever-present cheerful smile.

Gear
Chain Armor, Hand Axe, Dagger, Sling, 20 Stones, Pouch
Backpack, Bedroll, Crowbar, Flint & Steel, Hammer, Lantern, Oil (2), Rations (3), Hemp Rope (50 ft.), Sack (15 lb capacity), Iron Spikes (12), Waterskin

(61 Total lbs for 9 base move)

Wealth
gp 10
sp
cp

Story
From an early age, Dolgrim's parents knew that he wasn't very sharp, so they focused on raising him to be strong, moral and likeable. He's been on his own for a handful of years, travelling and seeing the world. He believes in being prepared and that if you take care of your gear, it takes care of you. He has a penchant for gadgets. Dolgrim's definitely naive and occasionally gets taken advantage of, but more often than not, his moral compass and friends keep him out of trouble.

What languages make sense for my character? Common & Dwarf? What about the languages section of the Dwarven Race Abilities on page 16?
