Brumes' eyes go wide as he listens to Oberon's embellishment of Fenwick's tale.

Haggart seems less impressed, but still shows a slight smile "Well then, you might be just what we need in these parts. The temple - don't know much of it myself, the Elder Temple the older folks call it, because it used to be the local temple before we built our own. I heard Stevins tell of somethin' bad happenin' there long ago. We all stay away, so I can't say much more about it. It's somewhere's down river, south from Harkin's ford."

At that, Haggart downs what is left of his ale and calls over Miralda. "These nice folks say they're buyin', another for me 'n Brume?"

"Funny thing about Harkin's ford," Brume adds. "No one has been through from up that-a-ways in, oh I'd say a week or so."

Oberon waves over the innkeep's wife to get more grog for the farmhands. Then asks them for directions to Stevin's holding.

Turning to the party: "Do we need to speak with Stevin or shall we head straight to Harkin's Ford and follow our noses from there?"

Gerhard says, "Well...if this Stevins fellow is on the way, we can ask him...I'm not itchin' to wander into a trap."

"It's only a trap if we don't know it's there." Grins Oberon.

"Stevin's place is right over yonder," Haggart says, pointing towards the entrance. "If ya go out the door here, right across is Pantro's place, look right, and the first farmhouse ya see is Stevin's. His fields are down the hill a bit, where we work mostly, but he'll be at his house most days by dinnertime. Tell him I sent you, we go back a ways, Stevin 'n me."

You figure you have several hours yet until Stevin is home, let me know if you want to hang out at the inn, or explore the town, or something else.

Oberon has promised himself bath and rest.

ooc: Sounds like the consensus is to head to Stevin's house first.

You relax for a few hours and avail yourselves of the facilities, such that they are. After dinner you head out into the village proper. The rain has finally ceased, although some clouds remain and it is a bit cooler. Immediately across from you is a stone building with a sign out front "The Hilltop Emporium". To the north (your right), you see three farmhouses. The first is well-tended with a bright yellow stone wall surrounding a large backyard, you think that must be Stevin's place. You can see someone walking around the backyard, head down.

Further north is what you guess is the town temple, but even from this distance you can see it is a terrible state of repair. Part of the roof is collapsed and the garden out front is choked with weeds. Beyond that are some more houses that look to be abandoned.

You head over to Stevin's house and approach the back, where you see now a tall, gaunt man is tending a large garden. He turns as you approach the yellow stone wall, "That's far enough, we've no trust in strangers lately. Who might you be and what do you want?" the man says. He is gripping a hoe tightly, his hands stained with dirt.

Oberon bows his head slightly, "We are here at your lord's bequest to lift the mire that afflicts Grimmsgate. If you are Stevin, I believe you may have some local knowledge that will aid us in doing just that"

Assuming this is Stevin, Oberon will introduce the troops.

OCC: we should come up with a dashing name for our heroic band perhaps?

"Aye, I'm Stevin. You must be those Haggart 'n Brume mentioned," Stevin says. He pauses for a minute. "I've been farming these lands for going on 30 years, never seen anything like it. Sad to say this village doesn't have much left in her. Haggart mentioned you might be askin' about the temple. The Elder Temple she's called, down south along the river a ways. Used to be our temple, but that was before my time. The story goes that a priest woke somethin' evil - a demon that killed all the temple priests and is there to this day. Why are we feelin' evil's hand in these parts now, after all these years? Can't say for sure, but if you can help us we'd be in your debt."
