Chapter 5: Delving deeper

Having reached the bottom of the stairs to the second dungeon level, a 3 m wide hallway runs north for another 6 m and then opens up into a 9 m by 9 m room.

There is an old, worn rug on the floor, all faded and dusty, and in the southwest corner lie three pale candle stubs. By Albin’s flickering torchlight it can be seen that in all cardinal directions pitch dark corridors, all 3 m wide, lead away from the room.

Freda will make certain to avoid the rug, wary of a trap as the group ponders which way to take. She will, if asked, toss her head to the east entrance.

Freda stealthily moves towards the east exit while carefully avoiding the rug, She sees that the hallway runs east for at least 9 m. The floor of this passageway is particularly dusty: all floors passed before where somewhat covered with filth, but in this corridor one can hardly see the flagstones underneath the thick layer of dust anymore.

Dahl will inspect the rug—after prodding it, and under it with his spear—to see if maybe it’s of some value under the apparent grime, and then looking to see if there’s evidence of a trap door hidden under there.

Having gotten a sense of the east passage from Freda, Dahl, while he is inspecting the rug, will ask Holger and Van if they want to sneak a peek at the west and north passages. Maybe we will something to help us pick a way.

The rug is so very worn that Dahl's spear rips right through the fabric at some points while poking around it. No abnormal sounds are heard when tapping along the surface and when Dahl lifts up the corner of the rug and flips it over, nothing but flagstone shows underneath it.
It's a nice looking rug, though: it really ties the room together ;)
The west passageway runs for about 6 m and then turns south. This corridor looks like it hasn't been used for a while: some cobwebs cover bits of both the walls, floor and ceiling.

The corridor leading north is at least 9 m long and after 6 m a junction, with a hallway leading off to the west, can be seen. Unlike the other passageway, there are some markings in the dirt on the floor that indicate that this corridor might have been passed through, perhaps even quite recently.

“Seems like someone else may be down here. Shall we head north and see who or what we find?”

Memphisto says, "Let's do that! Maybe we'll run into someone we know?"

Freda snorts. "Oh? You've got an acquaintance or two down 'ere, eh?" the hafling quips as she head cautiously down the north corridor.

The party moves up to the junction in the northern hallway, Freda carefully scouting ahead and making sure it's safe to pass. At the split, Albin pulls out a new torch and lights it with his dying one.

To the west, the hallway ends at a door after 6 m. A faint, flickering light can be seen along the door frame, indicating that the space that lies beyond it is lit. Looking to the north, the passageway turns right (east) after 6 m.

“Freda, will you have a listen at the door? I wonder if we’ve found where Father Faskull is?”
