Just like the one before, the door is somewhat stuck because it's swollen with damp. Lisglen grabs the door handle with both hands and gives it a good pull: it doesn't budge...

Mechanics:
  • Lisglen: open door... 1d6 = 4 => FAIL

Memphisto encourages Lisglen, "Give it another go!"

“Good fellows, let me have a try. We don’t want to make too much noise or spend too much time on this.”

Lisglen steps aside and Dahl grabs the door handle, placing a foot against the door post en pulling with all his might... The door flies open!

Behind the door is a completely trashed 9 m by 9 m kitchen, with a disused fireplace and a couple of overturned tables. Smashed crockery is spread all over the floor: it's a complete mess. There is another door in the south wall.

Mechanics:
  • Dahl: open door... 1d6 -1 = 1 => SUCCESS

“Zounds! Looks like raiders have already ransacked this place,” Dahl jokes as makes his way to the disused fireplace and checks in that.

Dahl is only two steps into the room when he steps on a large piece of broken pottery, crushing it under his foot with a loud, crunching sound. He stops dead in his tracks, staying perfectly still for a few seconds. The rest of the party, still in the hallway, holds its breath... There comes no reaction to the loud noise, and the party slowly and quietly exhales in relief.

Carefully avoiding the crockery strewn across the kitchen floor, Dahl reaches the fireplace and takes a closer look while the rest of the party slowly and warily shuffles into the kitchen. The fireplace looks like it hasn't been used in a while, it's pitch black with soot and the bar on which cooking pans and pots once were hung is broken.

“Just a broken kitchen,” Dahl mumbles to Memphisto and Lisglen. “Shall we see if there’s a dining area or store room behind this other door?”

"Certainly."

Dahl will listen at the door before trying to open it. If what’s on the other side was a store room, there may be rats or centipedes or some other, larger scavenger milling about and making noise.

Dahl tiptoes through the debris and places his right ear to the door. He closes his eyes and listens intently...

No sounds of vermin come from the other side: no swarming of centipedes or pattering of rats. Instead a soft, low mutter can be heard in the distance. Dahl cannot make out any words, but the mumbling is quite rythmic, somewhat musical even, and he notices a pattern that seems to repeat every 10 seconds or so.
