Wouter: I had meant to also say that Dahl will hurl his spear at his guy when @20 feet and then draw his axe.

jcftao: Thanks.

Albin slowly puts down the torch and nocks an arrow. He starts pulling back the bow string... His arm muscles tremble slightly as he aims for the acolyte sitting on the far right but his first shot hits nonetheless: the acolytes disorderly get to their feet and grab maces from under their robes, ready to defend themselves. Dahl's spear misses its target, the acolyte sitting on the left, and he pulls out his axe. Albin's second arrow flies straight over the head of the acolyte he targeted before and the acolyte screams in anger: "Who dares disturb our sacred rituals..? Get them!"

Holger dashes forward with his longsword raised, slashing wildly at one of the other acolytes, who looks particularly buff. His blow misses, hacking deep into the wooden table. Finnur takes a swing with his short sword at the remaining acolyte, but this one seems to be quite a bit faster than the other ones as he swiftly retreats to the back of the room, leaving Finnur cleaving thin air.

The latter acolyte does not carry a mace, but totes a heavy, two-handed battle axe instead. His hood has slid off and through long strands of dirty blond hair, a grim face watches the ordeal take place.

Please declare your actions for the next combat round...

Combat mechanics:
  • Magic
    • Memphisto: preparing to cast "sleep"...
  • Missile
    • Albin: arrow fired with short bow (1/2)... 1d20 + 2 + 1 = 21 => HIT for 1d6 - 1 = 1 damage
      The +2 bonus is thanks to the short range at which the arrow is fired.
    • Albin: arrow fired with short bow (2/2)... 1d20 + 2 + 1 = 10 => MISS
      The +2 bonus is thanks to the short range at which the arrow is fired.
    • Dahl: spear... 1d20 + 1 + 2 = 14 => MISS
      The +1 bonus is thanks to the medium range at which the spear is thrown.
  • Melee
    • Finnur: short sword... 1d20 = 2 => MISS
    • Holger: longsword... 1d20 + 1 = 4 => MISS

Memphisto fears that the company has lost advantage. He holds his hands outstretched and speaks the incantation, triggering the sleep spell.

Dahl grunts in disappointment, clutches has axe, and strides forward at his missed target. “Yield yourselves,” he shouts, “yield and live, for we are but scouts of a larger company!”

Mephisto mutters the words to his incantation and as he finishes his gestures and utters the final words all acolytes lower their maces, blink with their eyes and slump to the floor, fast asleep.

Holger, Albin and Finnur lower their weapons and give eachother a questioning look: attacking sleeping, defenseless creatures is in line with neither their code of war nor honor.

Dahl’s screaming does not wake the acolytes: it is known that from a magical sleep you won’t wake until physically shaken about. The blond-haired acolyte with the battle axe does however seem te be somewhat less affected by Memphisto's spell as he moans in his sleep, apparently in reaction to Dahl's message.

Combat mechanics:
  • Magic
    • Memphisto: casting "sleep", affecting…
      • 2d8 = 3 “first level” creatures (up to 1+1 HD)
      • 2d6 = 6 “second level” creatures (up to 2+1 HD)
      • 1d6 = 4 “third level” creatures (up to 3+1 HD)
      • 1 “fourth level”creature (up to 4+1 HD)

      S&W WhiteBox rules are very minimal and perhaps even erroneous on "sleep", so I went with the Original Rules for this one.

Memphisto relaxes a bit, "Let us make use of this time. Can we bind them? I'm not so used to killing as to cut anyone's throat in their sleep...yet. What say you to bringing them back to the town for interrogation and jail? Let the local lord decide their fate."
