Yeah there's some good advice here, especially if you combine it with Chris Gonnerman's advice. The guy on the youtube video meandered a little bit with his presentation (he could have done it all in about 15 minutes maximum as far as I'm concerned), but there's definitely some good advice there! Combine all this with the INT based min / max amount of spells, % chance for learning spells, plus rolling for maximum spells possibly known (from Swords & Wizardry Core / Complete) and you should be good to go with your Magic Users.
This stuff combined together has helped me with my vision for what constitutes a D&D Magic User. :D
