Hedwig was in a foul mood when he and his horse broke through the treeline of the glade. He took a moment to catch his breath, his pale eyes peering out from beetling brows as he took in the well-timbered house in the middle. He was a tall man encased in a suit of plate that had seen much better days in older times. Tarnished and flecked with rust, the ancient plate was dented here and there yet the old man wore it well. A sword rested at his hip and his shield rested at his horse's saddle. The visor of his helmet was up, revealing a face etched with deep lines, a jutting chin and a potato nose.
"Come along, Goliath," he murmured to the horse behind him, a large black and white destrier that wickered in response.
"We''ll drink some water and ask for the way out of this forest." Holding the reins Hedwig trudged on toward the lodge. Then suddenly he saw her, a woman of startling beauty approaching
mythictom wrote:"Hello, Sir Knight, my name is Moonglimmer, and this motley menagerie," she gestures to the people behind her, "are my boon companions on a brief quest to find a rowan tree."
Hedwig, struck by her ethereal beauty, bows before the elf, his old armor creaking with the effort,
"My lady, I am but your humble servant Sir Hedwig of Savenna. Forgive me as I do not have the easy way with words as a bard or poet, but you are as radiant as the summer sun." He takes her hand and brushes his lips against her knuckles before righting himself up before her, his poise straight and unyielding.
"Did I hear you correctly, that you are on a quest?" The deep wrinkles around his eyes pulled away from his eyes as his brows rose.
"I have met several knights of Nye." Impertinent youths all, he thought, his ears still burning from their laughter at the sight of him.
"They say this forest is home to fell beasts and fiends of evil. The forest is no place for such a fair lady as well as the young child in your retinue. If you won't heed my warning, then let me accompany you as an escort on your quest for the hunt for the Jabberwocky is of less import."
Hedwig draws steel and kneels before her, his sword held before him, tip in the grass, his gauntleted hands holding the grip.
"I pledge my sword and my life to you, Lady Moonglimmer, my oath dissolved only when your quest is accomplished. On my sacred honor!"
Before he hears her response, Hedwig catches something in the corner of his eye. His eyes widen in alarm at the sight of the ettercap and quickly rises, grunting with the effort.
"Egads!" he cries out, putting himself between the elf and the creature.
"I'll protect you, m'lady!"
