Here's my take on XP. It is a test to see how it works in play. I am basing this on advice from DungeonCraft (youtube videos by Prof. Dungeonmaster).
This is it in a nutshell. Let me know if you like or dislike this method. It is simple to implement and seems sensible.
XP and Goals for Beyond the Borderlands Play by Post
XP rewards....
1-2 pts for obtaining objectives
1-3 pts for overcoming challenges (1=medium, 2=difficult, 3=Saving Pvt Ryan)
Recap of events and points awarded....
Village of Rumpstone--
Erwin, Sigga, Roger, and Moonglimmer travel to village of Shorne to recover Roger's stolen wagon and shubbery
Village of Shorne--
Fight rough men at the Lion and Lamb tavern. The knave Rindel gets away!
Wagon and shrubbery recovered! (2 pts XP)
PCs travel towards Deliverance in search of Rindel and adventure.
Village of Dubbston--
PCs kill wolves terrrozing local farmers. (1 pt XP)
Near Forest of Nye--
Meet Bizenghast and Fungo
Meet Otis the Simpleton fighter
Jub Jub bird attacks but befriended by Erwin (1 XP)
Travel to Beamish Hall to speak with Lord Beamish (1 XP)
Travel into Forest of Nye
Mome Rath (green boar) killed by PCs (1 XP)
Meet Sir Hedwig
Meet Aethelwise (1 XP)
Travel north into forest
Help Knights of Nye (Sir Tavish Beamish) fend off Bandersnatch (2 XP)
See sign of Jabberwocky
Find rowan tree!
Climb tree and get rowan branch (1 XP)

Totals...
Erwin, Sigga, Roger, and Moonglimmer each have 10 xp.
Erwin, Sigga, and Roger level up.
Moonglimmer is will advance at a slower pace, needing 15 xp (to reflect the slower advancement of elf variants in Whitebox rules).
Fungo, Bizenghast, and Otis each have 7 xp. They will level up after gaining 10xp.
Sir Hedwig earns 4 xp. He will level up at 10 xp.
Before reaching 3rd level, some milestone needs to be achieved by each PC. This will be determined in part by the goals of each PC.

2nd level! Woohoo! I did not expect Erwin to live that long... hence his last name 
So the last update to Erwin has him at "XP: 612 (need 1,350 w/ 10% bonus figured in)". Is there a new scale or are we switching to DM fiat/goal -based for how quickly we progress?

Read my earlier OOC post with XP details. It's all there...a little handwaving both not with both hands.

Ok, gentlemen, that concludes Chapter 2 ~ Into the Forest of Nye.
I know that my son (playing Roger the Shrubber) and Sigga (played by Tamerlaine) will not be continuing.
My question to you, and it is an important one, is what do we do going forward?
I am happy to continue the play by post and I think I can start posting every other day to keep it moving.
So, I will post a new chapter and go from there. If any of you wish to continue with Chapter 3, then post in it.
Otherwise, if you have other pursuits or just want to move on to some other game, please know that I am
fine with that. I hope you've all had fun. I'll start Chapter 3 shortly.
