Short and useful with good art, should be the goal.

So do we want to add a level 2, level up for each class? And just say, something like "congratulations, you have completed your first adventure! You can now raise your characters to level 2" or something like that. Would probably make new players feel like they really accomplished something.
I like the idea, but keep it super simple: XP for second level, add another HD, adjust saves by -1, limit new spell choices to two or three spells. It could be a small optional text box after the pre-gens.

I like the idea of encouraging the referee to make a second level, but maybe just introduce one or two new monsters that may be lurking down there rather than trying to come up with a full bestiary. ;) Another thought on this: maybe add a couple of hooks/rumors for the referee to embellish upon.

Okay, it's been too long. I'm just going to provide what I have so far on the Player's side. I apologize for how sloppy it is at this point. The words in black or the original and the red is the changed. Tables still need to be inserted and all that.

This was pretty hard to do. I found myself not really wanting to change much, because it was already written so well. So a lot of it is just lightly altered.

What do you folks think; should this be a complete rewrite? Lightly altered? Maybe just keep it exactly the same but make sure it lines up with WB?

Is posting stuff at this stage helpful for a group project? Should I just create the whole thing how I would do it and then post for feedback?

I added a more cleaned up version with tables to the drive.

So the first one will kind of let you see how things were reworded a little bit. The second one would probably be better for an actual read through.

And an update on the art. I had originally commissioned art by Michael Clarke for my Into the Unknown project. This week, we worked out a new plan. So Michael's art will not be used for this book. However, I commissioned some art from Denis McCarthy to add to his stock art, which I will use for this book. You can check out Denis's art here: https://gwythaintny.wordpress.com/ Denis's art is very old school in style.

I'll take a look at this when I get a chance, thanks for putting the text together. I agree the original is very well done, and in fact I always liked the idea of just updating it to work with the latest WB version. So don't kill yourself, some light editing and updates are fine. If you had permission to use the original art, that is also fine, I don't think it's necessary to pay for new art unless you really want to (but I see where getting the original images to put into a new layout could be an issue).

Nice watercolor-style art, but I'm not sure I like 'Beginner Book'. Maybe 'Quick Play Guide' or similar?

What don't you like about Beginner Book?

I'm fine with changing it, but the reason I like it, is there is no confusion about what it is. It is a guide for beginner players, with all the advice included.

Quick Start or Quick Play Guide can also work, but maybe not as accurate?

Not sure, it just seems odd to me to see it called that, it was just a first impression. But I suppose you are right - it is, after all, for beginning players and refs, not for you or I.

I totally get that. First impressions are important!

Not that big of a difference but what about "Beginner''s Guide" if your first reaction is not good to that, then we can narrow it down to the word "beginner" as what maybe needs to change.

I like "Beginners' Guide". It sounds D&D-ish and it's clear what its intended purpose is.
