Re: Scrolls!
One limitation is that reading a spell from a scroll in combat is pretty blatant, perhaps even more so than "regular" spellcasting. If they gain the initiative, intelligent opponents are certainly going to target the reader, hoping to disrupt that spell. With two shots each per round, archers might ...

Re: Scrolls!
I started off with Moldvay back in the day, so it's not a rule I encountered until I picked up a copy of Holmes a couple of years ago. I've never used it but I think I will give it a spin some time soon. There are usually only two or three PCs in the games I run, so I don't imagine it will make the ...

Re: What level?
This reminds me of the E6 rules for low low fanasy. basically everyone max level is 6. I hadn't heard of E6 before, thanks. For anyone else who's interested, here's a link to a document explaining the concept: http://esix.pbworks.com/f/E6v041.pdf Perhaps this was an influence on John Stater's Blood...

Re: What level?
I recall you saying in another thread that you award 100 XP per HD for monsters defeated, rather than the nonlinear scale introduced in Supplement I: Greyhawk (a variant of which is in every edition of S&W). That will have the effect of speeding play at low levels and slowing it at higher levels, wh...

What level?
Back in the day, when we were teenagers and played D&D almost every day, my favourite games to play were those around levels 4-7. Reasonably beefy characters who had gathered a few magic items and could go up against a range of foes including dragons, hydras, giants, etc., and yet could be (and ofte...

Re: First time DM for White Box
One more thing I just thought of. You asked for general tips about running White Box. Don't overlook the fact (and I'm guilty of sometimes forgetting it myself) that bows fire twice per round in S&W. This makes archers (either in the party or among humanoid monsters) potentially pretty deadly, and m...

Re: XP for monsters killed
I've recently been rereading Empire of the Petal Throne (which, sadly, I've never played) and I keep being surprised at some of the deviations from OD&D. In particular, I'd forgotten that EPT awards 50 (rather than 100) XP per HD for slain monsters, but only to the player character who delivers the ...

Re: First time DM for White Box
I agree with almost everything Merias says. Most importantly, that White Box is a framework, a skeleton to be fleshed out as you will. I can't see any problem with adding race-classes. (I have a lot of love for B/X D&D.) As for thieves, I have a White Box campaign setting with thieves but no clerics...
