Re: Musings on Sleep in OD&D – Is it Over-Powered?

B/X also allows "victims" to wake up with a slap or a kick, etc, but I've never seen Holmes Basic so I can't comment on anything from there I'm afraid. With the B/X version you can really see how they wanted to clarify the OD&D version (I imagine that in the mid to late 70s TSR was inundated with s...

Re: Musings on Sleep in OD&D – Is it Over-Powered?

What that sentence means (probably ) is that for example, if you have 20 Orcs, and you roll 2d8=5, you then have to determine randomly which 5 of the 20 are affected. That might be important if the PCs want to affect the Orcs closest to them, but the ref randomly determines it's some other grou...

Re: New S&W Boxed Set - anyone get it?

Brave Halfling! Wow. Haven’t heard that name in years. I wonder what happened to John. I remember he had a crapton of bad luck. Hope he is okay. (Sorry for the threadjack!) :) no worries. I'm not sure what happened - I haven't seen him online in years (I also have his Delving Deeper and X-plorers b...

Re: New S&W Boxed Set - anyone get it?

The box set is the version of S&W I decided to get. Should be here Wednesday. I’m a sucker for box sets to begin with, and I really like the digest format. The set is currently on sale for $30 at frog god and includes the supplement pack. I couldn’t pass that up! Wow, that is a great price... and I...

Musings on Sleep in OD&D – Is it Over-Powered?

From https://smolderingwizard.wordpress.com/2024/05/25/musings-on-sleep-in-odd-is-it-over-powered/ Let’s look at the sleep spell in Men & Magic: Sleep: A Sleep spell affects from 2–16 1st-level types (hit dice of up to 1 + 1), from 2–12 2nd-level types (hit dice of up to 2 + 1), from 1–6 3rd-level t...

Re: Mapping in PbP (or virtually in general)

Essentially using it as a virtual whiteboard? Ah cool. I’ve seen something similar done with excel too. Interesting stuff. So many different ways! I like the oldish school method of the players mapping, but also don’t want to fuss more than a minute or two on mapping as they enter each room. ;) Exa...

Seconding the welcome! I'll be starting another PbP as well - unsure as to when, but I'll post a thread here when I'm ready to start it up.

Re: Mapping in PbP (or virtually in general)

I agree roll20 has way too many features attached to dynamic lighting. The features look great in-game, but take a lot of time for the GM to setup, so I never use them. Normally, I just use the fog of war, and reveal the map little by little as the players move around. That works, but hand-waives th...

Re: OSRIC 3.0

I played 1e a lot when I was younger...much younger ( ), and I still have a soft spot for it. I do have several OSRIC editions, including the Black Blade hardcover, which is really nice. AAC would be a good addition, I think. I do really like S&W's unified save, but it might be harder to integ...
