Brother Quisby sits with a look of intense concentration and then says, "...now about these meat pies...if I may have a couple more plus a tankard or two...that would be the start of an adventure!"

"Also, do you have a meeting place in town that I could use for evening collections..er...I mean evening services. I'm sure there are plenty of the faithful here that would seek to help out a wandering friar?"

"I am game to take a look at these bandits. But we'll need plenty of armed men...as you can rightly see, my faith is my only armor."

"Xyla"

Xyla agrees with her companions, then turns back to the Constable. "Thanks for the meal and ale; I'll take two more of each. Any chance some, or most, of the items that came up missing were an inside job? I know it's not likely; I'm just covering the bases."

She gives some thought to the constable's instructions, "I'm up for using some of that free, basic gear. I'm wondering if you have manacles, or locks and chains, we could put prisoners into?".

She thinks about the setting between the boat and here, "I didn't see a gallows. Probly'oughtta build one'o them, maybe a two or three-roper even!"

Remy fumes with rage at the injustice being described by the constable. By the mother of mercy, I won't stand for such slaughter of innocents. Count me in!

The voyageur takes a pull from his tankard, regaining his composure. And don't worry about the horses. Brother Quisby can walk. Isn't that right brother?

Brother Quisby laughs, "Well, I guess I could walk, but then of course, we'll need more meat pies and ale! All that walking makes a poor cleric hungry!"

The constable chuckles at the antics, but he nods approval at your acceptance. "I thank you, and I'll have my men here see to it that you get the gear you need. As for manacles or the like, I'm afraid I don't have anything like that, but we can give you enough rope of proper quality to restrain anyone you might find. I'll have them gather some food, rope, torches and some shelter. If you need anything else within reason and my ability to procure, just let me know now. As I'd mentioned, there is a fellow who can accompany you, he's a wizard, just off a boat as well. His name is Albrus, and he's staying here. I am assuming with your travel and whatnot, you are tired. You can sleep and depart early tomorrow if you wish, or we can get you on your way today. Either way is fine by me." He nods at Brother Quisby and says "We can't have you venturing out with no armor, can we? I can get you a serviceable suit of leather armor if you wish, it'd be used, but in good shape. A small shield too, if you need it."

The constable directs his men to get an accounting of your needs, and to collect everything needed.
Requests? Any special actions? When will you be departing?

Brother Quisby, you'll get a suit of leather armor, well used but in good shape, and a small wooden shield if you want it. Update your equipment.

"Armor?! I thought I was joining in more of an advisory capacity! Surely, you don't expect me to fight?! Who's going to hold the lantern?"

OOC--Brother Quisby will reluctantly accept the armor and shield but is still not happy at the prospect of fighting.

Xyla wanders the docks and inquires about "the best knots" that never come undone and aren't easy to un-do.

The constable chuckles at Brother Quisby's comments (either thinking he's joking, or ignoring his reluctance to fight) and he says "the caravan will have some guards, so I'd expect you won't have to handle anything by yourselves, but if you get to the location prior to the caravan, maybe you could scout out the area a bit, or ride ahead and meet them. Whatever you think is best. At any rate, you'll meet the caravan and escort them back. These hooligans seem to know when the caravans are coming, so I'm hoping that an unexpected party such as yourselves might be able to catch them unaware."

Xyla comes across some of the sailors who were on the boat you came over on, and spends about 30 minutes learning knots from the helpful crew. Hearing of what you need the knots for, they also show you some ways to securely hogtie a prisoner if need be.

When will you depart? If you want to get a good nights sleep, you can, and depart early in the morning, or you can leave today and camp a short ways down the road. Either is fine with the constable. If you have an objection to traveling with the mage he has told you about, let it be known, otherwise he'll join you when you leave...

Unless you have something pressing in town, or anything specific you want to do, we can move forward to whenever you decide to depart. If you have need of something, let me know and we can RP it before. If you don't have any specific requests, you'll get some basic equipment when you leave. The men with the constable deliver Brother Quisby his armor and shield and help him get it adjusted and fitted before they excuse themselves.

Xyla thanks the men, and continues to practice everything she was taught on her own coil of rope whenever she has a spare few minutes. The idea is to have her practice over and over, whenever time permits, so that the knots & hogtieing become second nature.

Gents, I think we should get a scoot on it now and camp somewhere down the road. DM: Can we at least make it to one of the areas known for bandit activity before nightfall?

My thinking is if we're going to scout out any trouble and get a pre-emptive strike in, we may as well setout now and camp out there tonight. Maybe Delth and one other can camp off road/hidden so we can flank and ambush our ambushers!

No, but you'll still be a bit less than a day's ride to the campsite, and you'd get there ahead of the caravan. If you press on today you will be in a nice grassy and light scrub plain that is conducive for camping and wide open. If you do that, you'll be able to make it to the destination with plenty of time to scout it out and plan ahead. (I haven't given you the landmarks yet, but the constable will ensure you know where you are going and how to know when you get there.)
