Chapter 3 The Kingdom Border

Fungo motions to Otis and heads up the left path.

Erwin will follow at a good distance, out of sight but within earshot.

Otis - Fighter

Otis will do his best to be quiet, and will advance at a distance behind Fungo.

Fungo stands in the darkness and squints, trying to see in the gloom.
He can discern two pathways. One leads to the right and slopes downward. The other leads to the left and makes a gentle rise.

Hitching up his britches, the hobbit summons his courage and walks quietly up the left path.

The lane is about 15' in width and Fungo can make out a row of structures on each side. The are contiguous, no space between them, but
have open doorways where the wooden doors have long since rotted away. The roofs are collapsed on most and a jumbled of stones lie in the pathway.

Fungo nimbly walks around them. As he moves forward several hundred feet, the lane opens up. It continues running to the south but looks to descend.
To Fungo's right is another street, a little narrower. The little hobbit is certain that he can see a faint glow from this pathway.



In the image, Fungo is the red X and Otis and others are the blue X.
The black dot is a stone watchtower, crudely built and doesn't look hollow. This is only a portion of the ring fort. At the point where Fungo is, the path begins to go downward ahead of him. The path to his right (left side of map) looks to rise a bit.

Fungo goes back and tells the others he will be heading up the branching path (to the right) and towards the light. He will keep too shadows.

Bizenghast: Sorceress


Bizenghast, preferring higher ground, follows the other's up the path to the left.

Otis - Fighter, worrying guy

Otis whispers to Fungo "you be careful now, you hear? I'll come runnin' if if you come across any trouble."

Once Fungo departs, Otis will very slowly advance, following the halfling's route.

Fungo once again makes his way to the side passage. It slopes up the hill gently until the glowing grows brighter.

In the center of the ringfort on the top of the hill is an alcove. Within the alcove, Fungo sees a blue stone with some yellow markings. It gives off a faint glow.
Fungo also notes that the air is warmer as he gets closer to it and that the grass is green and full.

The stone sits in the center of a hollowed out top of the hill. Besides the passage he has gone through, there are two more leading north and south. All the passages are open (no ceilings). Along each passage are gaping
black holes...entrances to dwellings in the ringfort.

Fungo can hear his heart hammering in his chest.

Suddenly, a loud roar echoes from somewhere close by. The sound is bestial and echoes through the passageway.

Fungo freezes, listening keenly for the sound. Can he discern which direction it comes from?

Otis unconsciously shivers as the roar reverberates through the passages. He pauses, looks around to make sure everyone is still with him, and then he continues to slowly (and as quietly as possible) proceed - following Fungo.
