The scholars, sages, philosophers, and ecclesiastes of Mirabilis have discovered that the vast majority of the hundreds of different sects, cults, and religions practiced by the people of this part of the world are actually aspects or masks of twelve deities. The Twelve, as they are collectively called, are the prime motivators behind most of the divine power to be encountered. The Twelve are divided among four main groupings.

The Primordials

These gods are ancient and eternal, existing everywhere and in all times. They are beyond mortal ideas of alignments, bearing Lawful, Neutral, and Chaotic aspects, often in conflict with one another. The following are their primary names, and some alternatives and epithets.

MOTHER NATURE, the Earthmother, The Creatrix, Bringer of Life (Common symbol: a tree or leaf)

FATHER TIME, Master of Cycles, the Chronicler (Common symbol: an hourglass)

THE GRIM REAPER, the Angel of Death, the Psychopomp, Lord of the Dead (Common symbol: a scythe, sickle or skull)

The Lawfuls

These gods are closer to mortals and following the teachings of Law. In Mirabilis, there is a Great Church of Law, which honors all three within its great cathedral.

THE HOLY SAINT, the Protector, Blessed Healer, Patron of Medicine, Education, Good Governance (Common symbol: four-spoked wheel)

THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN, Holy Queen, Angel of Mercy, Patron of Beauty, Art, and Music, Goddess of Love, Family, and Friendship (Common symbol: 8-point starburst)

LADY JUSTICE, Bringer of Law, Arbiter of Peace, The Judge, Scales of Justice (Common symbol: scales)

The Neutrals

These gods regularly interact with mortals, and not always for the mortals' betterment. They have no formal alliance among one another, and are worshiped individually.

THE OLD MAN OF THE SEA, the Sea King, Lord of the Deep, the Fisher King (Common symbol: fish or tail-fin)

DAME FORTUNE, Lady Luck, Madame Destiny, the Fickle Finger of Fate, Lady Kismet (Common symbol: silver or gold coin)

THE WILY TRICKSTER, Puck, Robin Goodfellow, Reynard the Fox, Coyote, Raven (Common symbol: mistletoe, sunflower or dandelion)

The Chaotics

This collection of gods want to undo the works of creation. Each feels their vision of the world is better than all others. Their worshipers will ally, for a time, but always betray one another. Their worship is openly discouraged in Mirabilis, but shrines do exists, as do secret temples and cults.

THE DARK LORD, Shadow King, the Faceless One, Lord of Lies, Great Tyrant (Common symbol: antlers or horns)

MISTRESS OF THE NIGHT, the Midnight Hag, Mother of Abomination, Queen of Harlots (Common symbol: serpent, spider, or bat)

THE GREAT BEAST, Father of Dragons, Leviathan, Behemoth, Typhon (Common symbol: fangs, claws or talons)

Game rules

Each Cleric must choose one of the above deities as a patron. The specific name of the deity and its religious rites can be created by the player (with DM input).

Each Cleric receives two Divine Gifts from their patron deity: often 2 specific spells usble once per day each, or a special skill or talent.

MOTHER NATURE
- Commune (nature only, 3 questions per day)
- Web of Vines (once per day, outdoors only, indoors- affects one target as Hold Person)

FATHER TIME
- Commune (History only, 3 questions per day)
- Alter Time: Haste (Cleric only, 1 turn per day, double actions)

GRIM REAPER
- Cause Light Wounds once per day
- From the Brink allows the Cleric to revive the recent dead (within 1 turn) to 1 hit point, once per day

THE HOLY SAINT
- Protection from Chaos once per day
- Cure Light Wounds once per day

QUEEN OF HEAVEN
- Light once per day
- Cure Light Wounds once per day

LADY JUSTICE
- Use any and all swords
- Compel Truth (as Charm Person, once per day, save @ -4 for Lawful, -2 for Neutral, lasts 1 hour)

OLD MAN OF THE SEA
- Water Breathing (Cleric only, once per day)
- Water Movement (as Fly, once per day, applied to either swimming or walking on water)

DAME FORTUNE
- Bless/Curse (1 target only, once per day)
- Confusion (lasts 1 turn, once per day)

WILY TRICKSTER
- Polymorph: Self (animals only, form based on HD, once per day)
- Phantasmal Force (lasts 1 turn, once per day)

DARK LORD
- Use hand-held bladed weapons
- Command (as Charm Person, total obedience, lasts 1 hour, once per day)

MISTRESS OF THE NIGHT
- Summon Monster (as Invisible Stalker, based on HD, lasts 1 turn, once per day)
- Darkness once per day

GREAT BEAST
- Command Beasts (as Charm Monster, animals only, lasts one hour, usable once per day)
- Polymorph: Self (animal shape only, lasts 1 turn per level, once per day)
