B1.4 - Gems for Trogs

Post by greyarea »

The party decides to go in the employ of the gnomes. Gems for troglodytes. You're told there's a dozen or so down here. Given the gnomes upstairs and their love of pastries, you can only hope it isn't a baker's dozen.

You head to the area you were told is trapped. Forewarned is forearmed, or so you're told.

You head back the way you came and then southeast at the big room. You are careful in your approach but you see no enemies.

The trap is in the southeast corner. You came via room J.

Once you arrive, it's plain to see. It's almost as if a large circle and X was drawn on the floor for you. You can plainly see the edges of the trap as the gnomes described it. (The Circle/X is not on the floor, but the description that the gnomes gave made it seem so. ;) )

You know it's a pit trap of some sort, huge beyond reckoning. The gnomes told you to "Try to find a way across without touching the floor. It will open and will drop you down to the bottom of the pit, where death awaits. You might want to take extra precautions, this is a deadly trap. Don't try to skirt around it: the troglodytes grease the floor there to keep folks from getting around it."

When asked how the troglodytes avoid it, he says that they somehow don't set it off. He's seen a gnome tracker follow the troglodytes across. The trogs walked across it like it was solid, but the gnome fell to his death.

He also told you to go east or northeast. South is where the drake is. The gnomes think the trap is actually for the wyrm, and not for keeping people out, although it accomplishes that too.

Slip

Slip approaches the trap and studies it to understand how it works and the chance of it successfully being set off, or falling in. She then looks for how one may get across.

Scout, Tinkerer, and Cartographer
+ Arrows = 20
+ HP: 5
+ AC: 5
Target priority: imminent danger (self or companion), then the target most injured.
When possible, Slip will always try to retrieve previously fired arrows.

Fauk muses, Tis funny that the trogs can pass yet the gnome scout fell through. Perhaps 'tis sorcery? If we find a lone trog, he'll tell us one way or another.

Tor thinks for a moment. Maybe the trap is triggered by smell. Or the absence of it, he adds with a smirk. But Fauk's right. Once we get one of them to talk, we'll know. Should we make a lot of noise to get at least one of them to come looking?

"The Gnomes told us to go East or North East, if I understood correctly."

Slip examines the mechanism of the trap (d100=02. Wow). She ascertains that there are specific steps that can be taken to allow passage: a path that doesn’t set it off. Anyone straying from the path will have a far fall. The path splits partway across. One going south and the other in the northeast direction.

She can also disable to trap if she wishes.

:o :o :o

The Scout, somewhat amazed, explains - in detail - to her companions. "If we can successfully and consistently traverse this hazard, perhaps we should leave it armed? I think I can successfully disarm it, however." She looks to her companions for guidance.

Fauk is happy to hear this news. "Let us keep the trap set. I'm glad you have found a way across, Slip. Lead the way and we will follow you!"

Brother Bert

Bert says "Hmm... what if Slip were to disable the safety part of the trap, and the trogs think they can cross it and they fall in? Might work, especially since they're so used to it working, they'd sure be in for a surprise if it backfired on them." And I'd be happy to act as bait to lure them out here, if you all think that'd work."

OOC: Either we could try to lure them out, or get across the trap area, and try to get them to follow us and see how many we can snag in the pit. At least try to even up the odds a bit.

Tor looks to Trebbelos to gauge the kid's reaction to the idea of leaving the trap set.
