Schmidt's Scary Sojourn

Post by merias »

In a panic and consumed by blind fear, Schmidt runs/stumbles/bumps his way through darkened dungeon corridors. He eventually comes to a door and curls up in a ball at its foot. After a while, he is not sure how long, the fear leaves him and he regains control of his faculties. He is sitting against a wooden door, beyond which he can hear muffled voices. It is dark and he cannot see. He still has his flail with him.

Actions?

Without getting up, Schmidt will put an ear up to the door to see if he can hear clearer the voices, and see if there’s any light coming from under the door. Preferably he’ll try to make out some words or at least what the language might be (orcish, goblin, etc) and perhaps how many of them there are.
After (or failing) that, he will slowly traverse the edges of (what he hopes is) the room, in the dark to see if he can figure out its dimensions. If, after 30’ or so, it turns out to be a hall, or one heckuva big room, he’ll go back to the door.

Great idea bringing oil but no torches Ron!

I have an idea for what’s next if those aren’t his party mates’ voices he hears. Probably move me closer to joining the fallen thread, but fingers crossed!

He does not hear common, it is definitely some kind of humanoid language, and he thinks there are 3 or 4 creatures talking. From feeling around, the door is at the end of a corridor that is 10' wide. He follows it straight away from the door for 30' and it appears to just continue, so he goes back to the door.

Oh, forgot to add - in the darkness you think you can see some light from under the door.

Hmm. A hall that dead ends in a door which is over 30’ long. Okay I’m guessing/hoping I might be in that southern passage from the crossways. Tempted to burn out the baddies behind that door, Schmidt will instead head quickly and quietly down that hallway, ears open and eyes peeled for sound or light. He’ll go at least 150’ from that door this time.

Schmidt proceeds down the hallway, and he can now see a light far ahead of him in the corridor - perhaps 100' - that was not there before. In the dim light he can also see a door that was 30' up on his left, that he must have missed in the dark.

I'll assume Schmidt went about 30' and saw the door to his left when the light appeared further ahead, does he want to continue towards the light, or do something else?

Marking that door in his head, and ignoring the advice from Tangina, Schmidt will continue towards the light. Carefully and as quietly as he can. :)

Schmidt walks about 60 feet and can see the light is now brighter - he can see just ahead a 4-way intersection that looks familiar, and a head peeking out from the east tunnel. It is Phelim!

This was (thankfully) for Schmidt a bit anti-climactic, I rolled randomly which way he would run and if he would open the door he came to, or hunker down in fear. He also made a few wandering monster rolls, given that I figured he was not concerned about being quiet while running in terror  . So he got lucky!
