Bonner heads up to join Schmidt. Before putting the key in the lock he checks for anything unusual in the construction (pit traps, sliding doors, acme style panels on springs etc) then uses the key in the lock.

He sees nothing unusual, apart from the aforementioned spike on the key and the matching cutout in the key hole.
