Prefer just delving.
Yep, that was my intent for this game, and why the town is mostly just a generic place to spend money and rest.

A mule is easy - 30gp for a mule and saddle bags (2400gp capacity). On the guard dog, you spend some time asking around the local taverns (you spend 50gp somehow), and you hear of a local farmer who has a trained dog he would be willing to sell - for the right price. How much is Salty willing to pay?
Salty is willing to splash up to 200gp on the dog. May as well go big since Salty's not likely to go home from delve 5 :D

You buy a grey wolfhound named Gruff for 150gp. He is a guard dog with a good sense of smell, and will obey a few simple commands (in game terms: stay, come, fetch what you throw. He can attack what is threatening you, but will check morale for large or especially scary creatures or situations).

Posting the new delve thread shortly... let me know if you want Suspos to join you this time or if there is anything else you want.

Sounds good. Is Heimer still coming along?
Also, unless anyone thinks any different, I'll look around for a sage to either identify Philo or sell him. Hasn't really been helpful thus far? Just seems like a Gygaxian-FU gold eater. :)

I think that our TPK Dungeon Master takes much inspiration from Gygax.

Personally, I love it!

I say we give the Gygaxian-FU gold eater a few more days. And let’s be judicious in what we ask it.

[grumbles in Grognardish]

My crew, when they get way upset over the hard-to-kill monster with no treasure, or the save or die trap I hit them with, usually use the full name: That's a Gary Gygax F-U! Even for the newish 1e/OSRIC modules! Always fun times

The first one I recall encountering was in B1 when we ventured down a hall and a portcullis came down behind us. No key. No way to break the bars. Slow starvation after much frustration by the players.
