You got it, Tholdy. Salty salutes before creeping down the stairs, checking for traps, tricks, and icky green snot.

Suspo waits for the more heavily armoured folks to move on before grabbing the mule's reins* and following along.

* reins? Bridle? Lead? I know embarrassingly little about horse stuff.
Because he is looking closely at the stairs, Salty notices the grease or whatever it is is smeared all the way down the stairs, to the landing. The landing below has some streaks of the goop running across it and a bit on the far wall, across from where the stairs end. Let me know how you want to proceed.

What is everyone else doing?

Is the grease dried or is it still slick? Is slipping an issue? Should we call OSHA?

Berthold looks up to the ceiling to see if he can spy a way to attach a rope. If we can somehow avoid these steps, he would prefer that. Or maybe set the cyclops over the stairs and use his corpse as a way to avoid the grease… He checks to see if that’s even an option.

Ride the cyclops down the stairs! :)
Schmidt checks the ceiling to see if that may be the greasy source.

Is he touching it? Smelling it? Tasting it?

It does not appear dried out, it still looks squishy and goopy.

The ceiling is about 15 feet overhead, neither of you see any dripping things or indication the grease comes from above. The corpses of the orcs and cyclops are still here, beginning to smell but otherwise undisturbed. The cyclops is probably 8 feet tall, and the stairs are 10 feet down.

No way!
Maybe toss an orc in it? Just to see what happens.

Berthold plops an orc corpse in the stuff at the top of the stairs (angling it so he’s out of the splash zone—beware Salty) and then shoves him down it.

However, before that he checks to see if the orc appears to have been dragged through it (buildup on boots or shoulders, etc). He will make a quick similar examination of the other corpses to her if any were dragged through this stuff before.

He will also check the floor by the door to the east to see if someone was dragged into there.

Maybe it'll burn, like kitchen grease? We could give anything down there a warm welcome. Salty says, gripping his torch.

Suspo rolls his eyes and snorts. Or maybe you could ride one of Berthold's orcs down and tell us what you see. You are the scout, are you not?

Scout isn’t the same as “sacrificial lamb” there, Suspo, chides Berthold. I like the light it on Fire suggestion. If the smoke doesn’t occlude everything, the light of the fire might illuminate the area down there.

Oh, not a sacrificial lamb, dear boy, Suspo drones,, tilting his nose in the air, I was thinking more vermin in a cellar.

Salty shoots a sidewards look at the sorcerer, dangles his torch over the grease.

Breathe deep, geriatrics and gentlemen.

Salty opens his hand, dropping the burning brand into the grease.

Doesn't look like it to Berthold.

There are no tracks or other signs of grease on the floor, only the bucket of the stuff near the east door.

The grease burns low and slow, with a blue glow and a sickly smell, like rotted meat. It doesn't spread well, either, being confined to the area you touch with the torch.

The dead orc thumps and rolls down the stairs, faster than you would have anticipated. When the body reaches the landing, you hear a grinding noise and the landing floor falls away. The orc body is swallowed up by a 10' square pit. A second later you hear a thump, and soft crunching noises.
